Die Welt wie wir sie kennen steht vor einer Katastrophe. Eine Katastrophe, die jeder irgendwie erwartet, doch nicht in seiner Verantwortung sieht. Konsequenzen sind zweitrangig, Verzicht ist ausgeschlossen; Menschen würden lieber sterben, als zu verzichten! In meinem Film ist diese Katastrophe bereits passiert, ein Miteinander ist nur noch im Kreise weniger Vertrauter zu finden. Jeder ist Feind, jeder ist für sich verantwortlich. Es ist Zeit seine Rechte einzufordern, sich zu bewaffnen und zu kämpfen. Nichts ist mehr gewiss, die Menschen streifen ziellos durchs Land. In dieser Leere fand die Gruppe in meinem Film Halt im Göttlichen. Sie lassen den Voodoo-Kult neu aufleben, sich von Visionen und einem Blutkult leiten und orientieren sich am Willen der Göttlichkeit, der geopfert und gehuldigt werden muss. Frei von Hemmung und Angst ist die Gruppe somit unschlagbar. Für mein Bachelor-Projekt übernahm ich offiziell die Rolle des Produzenten, kümmerte mich aber auch um alle anderen gängigen Aufgaben des Drehs und der Vorbereitung. Ich bastelte blutrünstige Requisiten und Kostüme, baute das komplette Szenenbild aus Schrott und Holz auf, organisierte den Studiodreh und kümmerte mich auch weitestgehend um die anschließende Postproduktion des Films. Entstanden ist der Experimentalfilm „Brootle“, der als Musikvideo des gleichnamigen Tracks des Berliner Künstlers Mad Zach funktioniert.

The world as we know it is facing a catastrophe. A catastrophe everyone is expecting but still doesn’t feel responsible for. Consequences are of secondary importance, renunciation out of the question; humans would rather die than go without.

In my film, this catastrophe has already happened. Community can only be found amongst a few friends. Everyone is the enemy, everyone fends for themselves. It’s high time people start reclaiming their rights, arm themselves and fight. Nothing is certain anymore, everyone aimlessly roams the planet. In this void, a group of characters finds support in the divine. They revive the voodoo cult, allow themselves to be guided by visions and a blood cult and follow a divine will which demands sacrifices and to be worshipped. Free of fear and inhibition this group proves to be invincible.

As part of my bachelor thesis I officially assumed the role of producer as well as taking care of shooting the film and all preparations. I crafted gory requisites and costumes, constructed the set completely of scraps and wood, organized filmling in the studio and mostly took care of post production as well. The result is the experimental film ‘’Brootle’’ which acts as a music video for the song of the same name by the artist Mad Zach from Berlin.

Was ist die Hauptaussage bzw. das Hauptziel deiner Bachelorarbeit?

Das Hauptziel meiner Bachelor arbeit ist eigentlich zu verwirren, sag ich mal. Primäres Thema ist eigentlich Gewalt und wir es dazu kommt. Das Gewalt entsteht, das Wut entsteht, und ich hab mir den Moment vor dem Wutausbruch, vor dem Gewaltexzess gewählt und das ganze in einen Film verpackt.

Kannst du uns was zum Entwicklungsprozess deiner Idee erzählen?

Also es war von anfang an Teil der Idee gewesen das ganze in so einer Mad Max Welt entstehen zu lassen. Von daher war es relativ einfach, in meinem Kopf war das Bild schon von Anfang an da. So war es dann relativ einfach das dann zu übersetzen und Dinge zu finden die dazu passen. Zum Beispiel das Video Spiel Boarder Lands, von der Ästetick her passt das alles in eine Schiene. Und dann hab ich mir einfach zum Thema gemacht: Rost, Blut und ... mehr Blut.

Wie viele von den Requisiten hast du selbst hergestellt?

Also ich hab eigentlich von diesen ganzen Bastelsachen fast alles selber gemacht, bis auf zum Beispiel die Waffen die haben meine Mitbewohner gemacht, weil ich es einfach Zeitlich nicht mehr geschafft habe. Und irgendwie bei so Kleinigkeiten konnte ich mir auf jeden fall helfen lassen. Aber eigentlich war ich von vorne bis hinten in jedem Schritt involviert.

Was sind in der Produktion für Kosten entstanden und wie hast du das finanziert?

Also wenn du einen Filmabschluss machst hier bei uns im Studium, in Hessen, gibt es die Hessische Filmförderung für alle Absolventen die etwas mit Film zu tun haben. Und da konnte ich viertausend Euro von denen bekommen. Das hat nicht ganz gereicht, das Budget, da hab ich selbst schon auch noch drauf gezahlt. Einfach wegen Sachen die man nicht vorhersehen konnte. Ich hab glaube ich so die Hälfte von meinem Budget - über die Hälfe ist für den Truck draufgegangen den ich gebaut habe. Und die andere Hälfte hat sich so zwischen den ganzen Requisiten und dem Filmequipment aufgeteilt.

Bist du zufrieden mit dem Endergebnis?

Erst mal schon. Als ist noch nicht fertig, es wird bestimmt noch ein halbes Jahr dauern bis alle Kleinigkeiten noch bearbeitet sind. Aber fürs erste bin ich zufrieden.

What is the main massage or goal for your thesis?

The main goal of my thesis is to confuse, I think. The primary theme is violence and how it happens. The building of violence and of rage, I choose the moment right before an outburst of rage and violent excess and packaged that into a film.

Can you talk about the development of your idea?

It was always part of my idea to set the film in a Mad Max esque world. I had that vision in my head from the beginning. Which made it relatively easy to translate it into concrete things that would fit. For example the game “Boarder Lands” is right in line with that aesthetic. So what I made to my motives were: rust, blood and ... more blood.

How many of the props did you build yourself?

Well, most of the things that I had to build I made myself with a few exceptions like the weapons which my roommates made for me because I was running out of time. And there were a few little things here and there where I had some help. But overall I was involved in all parts of the process, top to bottom.

How did you finance your film?

Well, when you are doing a film degree in Hessen there is the “Hessische Filmförderung” for everybody doing anything film related in their thesis. And they granted me 4 thousand euros. Which didn’t quite cover everything so I had to pay the rest out of pocket. Some cost you just can’t always plan ahead for. I think half the budget, maybe even more than half, went to the truck I built. The other half got split between props and filming equipment.

Are you happy with the results?

As of now yes. But it’s not all done quite yet, it will probably take another half year to wrap up all the details of post production. But for now I am happy with it.
